❓ Frequently Asked Questions
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours to get quality points, summing all quality points, then dividing by total credit hours. Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives 12 quality points. Total quality points (24) divided by total credits (7) = 3.43 GPA.
Unweighted GPA uses a standard 4.0 scale for all courses regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA gives bonus points for harder courses: Honors courses max out at 4.5 and AP or IB courses max out at 5.0. Most colleges recalculate GPAs on an unweighted scale for fair comparison, but weighted GPA shows academic rigor on transcripts.
Admission to highly selective universities like Ivy League schools typically requires a GPA of 3.9 or above (unweighted). Top state universities generally look for 3.5 to 3.8. Community colleges often accept students with any GPA. Remember that GPA is just one factor — test scores, extracurriculars, essays, and recommendations also matter significantly.
Yes, but the impact depends on how many credits remain. GPA change is proportional to remaining credits versus total credits. If you have 30 credits left from 90 total, even straight As would only raise a 2.5 GPA to about 2.875. Use our semester GPA calculator to model exactly what grades you need to reach your target cumulative GPA.
Most graduate programs require a minimum GPA of 3.0 for consideration. Competitive programs at top universities typically want 3.5 or above. PhD programs in STEM often look for 3.7+. Some programs place more weight on research experience, GRE scores, or letters of recommendation than on GPA alone. Check specific program requirements.
